Although society has changed so much over the years, the one underlying emotion that gives each and every human being fulfillment is happiness. When you are happy with your life, you are in an amazing state of mind, and seemingly nothing can bring you down. However, along those same lines, when something negative happens in your life, it almost immediately impacts your happiness and therefore your satisfaction with life itself. But how can we avoid that from happening, if not completely, then at least as much as humanly possible?

To start, make sure you surround yourself with things that you love, starting with the people in your life that you choose to call family. Select a spouse who will love you for who you are and bring you happiness on a daily basis. Stay close to family and friends who will do the same. And for those who will do nothing but send negative energy your way, just try to minimize their presence in your life.

When you surround yourself by people and activities who make you happy, you ensure that your baseline state of mind is a positive one. So even if negative things do happen in your life (which they inevitably will do from time to time), they are fairly minimal when compared to the wealth of happiness in your daily life overall. As a result, you will be more inclined to stay happy rather than let negative things bring you down.

But as I just said, negative things can and will happen to you multiple times in your life. You may end up being physically or emotionally hurt by something that happens to you or to someone you love. So what can you do to keep your spirits up during such trying times?

First of all, do your best not to dwell on things you can’t control. Even though something bad may have happened in your life, realize that in certain cases, there is literally nothing you could have done to change the outcome. Once you take solace in that fact, you will be more inclined to push negative energies due to unfortunate circumstances to the back of your mind, freeing yourself up to focus on the positive things again.

But what if it was something that you could control? In this case, your next best option is to use it as a learning experience. We are always learning in life, no matter how old we get. So when we mess up and cause ourselves suffering to whatever degree, the only way to make a positive out of a negative is to introspectively analyze what we did wrong, and think about how we can improve and not let it happen again. In this way, you are not only preventing a negative event from being purely negative, but you are also improving yourself as a person at the same time, both of which giving you joy in a time where joy is not expected.

Overall, happiness is not only a way of life, but a state of mind as well. It starts with actively surrounding yourself with people and things that make you happy all the time. That part is relatively easy if you are conscious about your life decisions. The second part is dealing with negative aspects of life as they come, which is something that is not quite as easy. However, despite that fact, it is something that every person has the ability to learn how to do. And once you take control of both of these aspects of life, you will find yourself living the happiest and fullest version of your life.
