Update: CBC News has reported that as of September 2nd, Canadians had donated $35.8 million toward relief efforts. Donation matching ends on September 16th!
The Canadian Government has put forth an initiative that will hopefully encourage Canadians to donate much needed funds to East Africa. The area, which includes the countries Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya and Uganda, is currently experiencing a famine that is affecting 13 million people.
Last week The Canadian Red Cross shared that ten financial institutions across Canada are accepting donations on their behalf. The Government will match dollar for dollar any donations made between July 6, 2011 – September 16, 2011 and then allocate the funds where they believe they are most needed.

Today I am participating in a World Vision Link Up which challenges Bloggers to give up one thing that we spend $10.00 on weekly, and instead, turn that into a $10 donation. Be sure to read the blog entry, it is very well written and brings up the topic of raising conscious children.
This week, my husband and I will give up Tim Hortons. We don’t go everyday, but certainly in 7 days and especially with travel this week, we would have spent this much.
This is a small sacrifice to make.
If you are a Blogger, visit World Vision’s blog to Link up. For others, use Facebook and Twitter to spread the word using the hashtag #faminenomore.
Text “FAMINE” to 20222 if you live in the US to donate $10. Canadians can text “WORLD” to 45678 which will be a $5 donation. With the Canadian Government doubling donations, texting twice will result in a $20 donation!
Can’t stress this enough, EVERY DOLLAR HELPS!
