Wisdom Wednesday ~ A Quote from the Tao Te Ching

(source)

I am currently reading the Tao Te Ching (along with many others), and it has become easy to see why so many spiritual teachers and leaders have turned to Lao-Tzu‘s words for wisdom in both the distant and recent past. The Tao (literally meaning the “Way”), is an ancient Chinese text based on Taoist philosophies, written approximately 2500 years ago.

Today for Wisdom Wednesday, I am sharing a favorite quote from the Tao – “At the center of your being you know have the answer – you know who you are and you know what you want.” ~ Lao Tzu

So many of us are looking for all of the answers in life, we are in search of our destiny. It has become extremely clear to me that the answers truly are within us, and we simply must learn to listen for them. Some call it intuition, others call it a gut feeling, either way it is something that we must learn to become attuned to.

How many decisions do you make amidst the chaos of daily life? Practice sitting in silence and asking yourself the big questions at this time. This silence brings clarity.

That’s a great quote Heidi. Amazing wisdom in the Tao. My first real exposure to it was Wayne Dyer’s Change Your Thoughts Change Your Life audio book where he narrates each verse and provides his own interpretation. It’s something I’ll be listening to for YEARS though – to absorb all 81 versus at once is a lot. I think for me, the versus that I most need in my life at the moment ring true as I listen. The quote you have here has been a theme in my own personal spiritual work over the past few months. I really is a transformational moment when you begin to start looking within more than without. Like stepping through a door, and you can;t go back, not that you ever would want to. Thanks for sharing this. :) – Pete

Pete – I have heard SO MANY spiritual teachers refer to the Tao, I had to get myself a copy. I have heard Wayne, Eckhart, Deepak, etc. speak about it, and I love how there are so many interpretations. It’s kind of like A Course In Miracles I think, where it takes a long time to go through it and as you say, the versus show up at just the right time.

That door you are speaking of – I just wrote about it actually, almost ready to be posted ;)
    Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for the Lao Tzu inspiration.  It takes a while to “get” some of the saying in the Tao.  Plus – different translations from the Chinese make it more complicated.  I’ve basically been reading and re-reading the Witter Bynner version for over 30 years, and just last week, I was able to understand what he was saying in one of the verses.  I guess I wasn’t old enough before.  Like we say to our kids – I’ll explain it when you’re older.  So hang in there and enjoy and be inspired by what you can grasp and apply to your life. Moment to moment, of course…
